India is a country rich in culture, tradition, beauty, and diversity. Its incredible variety of religions, civilizations, and languages make it truly exceptional. For those seeking an authentic Indian experience, visiting the country's numerous spiritual sites is essential. The National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual and Heritage Augmentation Drive, launched in 2014 with an initial provision of INR 100 crores, focuses on developing and identifying pilgrimage sites across India to promote sustainable pilgrimage tourism. This scheme aims to integrate pilgrimage destinations in a prioritized, planned, and sustainable manner, providing visitors with a genuine religious tourism experience. The growth of domestic tourism significantly depends on pilgrimage tourism.

Uttarakhand is home to a multitude of respected temples, holy rivers, and spiritual landmarks, rich in religious mythology, stories, and heritage. Devotees visit for pilgrimages to Panch Prayag, the confluence of five rivers that ultimately forms the sacred river Ganga, worshipped as a goddess, and to other important religious sites such as Bageshwar, Joshimath, and Baijnath. This state is also known as the land of pilgrims.

The Char Dhams, comprising Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, are significant pilgrimage sites. Badrinath Temple, also known as the Badrinarayan Temple, is one of the Char Dhams located in Badrinath town. Kedarnath village, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, is centered around the famed Kedarnath temple, situated close to the Chorabari glacier, the source of the Mandakini River, at an elevation of 3,580 meters.

Yamunotri, one of the Char Dhams, draws thousands of pilgrims each year. The Yamunotri Temple, located in a small mountain village, serves as the starting point of the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage.

Gangotri, situated in Uttarkashi, is a village with the temple of Goddess Ganga at its center. It is one of the four holy locations that make up the revered pilgrimage circuit in northern India, known as the Char Dhams. Gangotri, set among tall Garhwal Himalayan hills, glaciers, and deep forests, is one of the highest pilgrimages in India, approximately 3,415 meters above sea level, and is a 12-hour journey from Rishikesh.
