Eco-friendly Practices in the Hospitality and Tourism Sector - By Ayush Tahailyani
The escalating issues of global warming and ozone layer depletion compel us to rethink and act decisively to conserve the environment.
In today's world, environmental preservation is a paramount
concern. The escalating issues of global warming and ozone layer depletion
compel us to rethink and act decisively to conserve the environment. The hotel
industry is also embracing this ethos, with the growing popularity of Ecotels
and the adoption of eco-friendly practices underscoring the sector's
commitment.
An eco
hotel, also known as a green hotel, is an accommodation that has implemented
significant environmental improvements to minimize its impact on the natural
environment. These establishments adhere to the principles of green living and
often undergo certification by independent third parties to validate their
eco-friendly credentials. Traditionally, eco-friendly hotels were often referred
to as Eco Lodges, particularly those situated in natural settings like jungles,
with designs influenced by traditional building methods.
The ECOTEL
methodology assesses a hotel's environmental friendliness across five crucial
parameters, known as 'The Five Globes': Environment Commitment, Solid Waste
Management, Energy Management, Water Management, and Employee Education and
Community Involvement. To achieve ECOTEL certification, a hotel must meet
minimum qualifying criteria across each of these parameters.
Some
eco-friendly practices include using recycled paper products, biodegradable
toiletries, and essential oils without chemical additives. Various herbs and
natural substances, such as aloe vera, neem, and turmeric, can be incorporated
into toiletries. Refill-dispensers are also encouraged to minimize waste.
